What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?
It is estimated that 35% of patients suffering with depression do not adequately benefit from available treatment options. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an entirely new approach to treating Major Depression and offers patients new hope!
In clinical trials, TMS has been proven to be safe and effective. About 60% of patients respond to TMS, reducing their symptoms of depression, and 25% are depression free! TMS has been researched for over 30 years, and in 2008, the FDA approved TMS for treating Major Depressive Disorder when medications don’t work. It is well tolerated, and the effects are long lasting.
TMS creates a magnetic field which passes through the skull and into the outer layer of the brain. This magnetic field makes the brain cells more active and strengthens the connections between them—similar to how exercise makes muscles stronger. TMS “exercises” a region of the brain known as the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, or l-DLPFC. The DLPFC is part of a brain network involved in promoting and suppressing emotion. Its job is to help the conscious, thinking part of your brain oppose the depressed feelings coming from deeper within the brain. As the DLPFC becomes stronger, depression is reduced.

Benefits of TMS
Effective Non-Drug Treatment
TMS is a drug free, alternative treatment for treatment-resistant depression when medications do not work.
Treatment does not interact with other medications and patients can continue any medications they are currently taking throughout their TMS treatment.
FDA Approved for Major Depression
TMS has been approved by the FDA since 2008 to treat Major Depressive Disorder.
It is covered by most insurances, including Medicare and Masshealth.
Safe, Non-Invasive Therapy
In TMS Therapy, we apply the magnetic coil on the left side of your forehead, and you will feel a tapping sensation for approximately 30 minutes.
Patients feel little to no pain and can resume normal activity immediately after their session.
No Systemic Side Effects
Unlike most medications, TMS does not cause any systemic side effects.
At most, patients may experience irritation at the treatment site or have a slight headache.
